Solo, But Never Alone: The Magic of Independent Travel

I was 10 years old the very first time I traveled alone.  My parents gave me permission to go on my very own adventure.  Okay, okay – the adventure was flying from Indiana to Wisconsin to visit my aunt and uncle.  My parents walked me to the gate and watched me board my flight. I flew direct to Wisconsin and was greeted at my arrival gate by my relatives.  Still, this simple step into independence helped created my confidence and love of solo travel.

Have you ever discovered a new place on your own?  There is something empowering about treating yourself to exploration where the only consideration is what YOU want to do.  This type of travel gives you a different level of awareness. It forces you to look up and around. Traveling alone introduces you to new people, often native to the place you’re visiting, who can be your greatest teachers along way.  Maybe you learn a few phrases of a new language to help navigate your journey.  Maybe you learn of local eateries that you’d never typically consider but, in fact, experience the best food you’ve ever tasted.  Maybe you wander a museum and think a little longer on a painting because the thoughts swirling in your mind are uninterrupted.

What would you do if you visited somewhere new all by yourself?  When I landed in Rome, I knew I wanted to see the Trevi Fountain.  As I stood before the masterpiece, I cried.  I just looked around and listened.  I heard the blended harmonies of languages from around the world and aquatic echoes of coins being tossed into the waters.  I was present.  Despite traveling alone, I was more connected to the world around me than ever before.
